I’m so lucky to already have one of my 2014 wishes come true… New York, Blue Note Jazz Club, this month on monday the 27th!!
2013 was an exciting year with great experiences and journeys.
So excited to have this recording to show you!
So excited to announce that some of the songs of my album Along the Road will get arranged for big band!
Recently I was invited by the Dutch “Jazz Art Orchestra” to join them on stage for a concert at the beautiful Theater Odeon in the northern Dutch city Zwolle.
Concerts in Basel, Switzerland (26-28 April 2013) at Roche’n’ jazz series at Tinguely Museum Basel, Off Beat Jazz Festival and at Bird’s Eye Jazz club
Returning a second time in two months to Switzerland has showed me how marvellous and enthusiastic the Swiss audience can be.
On both times, March in St. Moritz (at the Winter edition of the Festival da Jazz St. Moritz) and recently April in Basel (at the Off Beat Jazz Festival, Bird’s Eye Jazz club and Roch’n Jazz at the Tinguely Museum) the concerts were sold out.
New return to Switzerland and Holland – concerts end of April, beguining May
Maria Mendes will return once more for two concert series in Switzerland and Holland. For these concerts the harmonica player Wim Dijkgraaf will come all over from Brazil, making it possible to have the original cast of her album gathered once again on stage.
Full concerts at the winter edition of the Festival da Jazz St.Moritz
On March 15th and 16th 2013, Maria Mendes, together with Alexander van Popta (piano) and Guus Bakker (bass) performed at the winter edition of the Festival da Jazz St.Moritz in Switzerland.
These were two concerts, busy/full house with an enthusiastic and lovely audience. The location was out breathing and the experience was marvellous.
The Festival’s production team and the Kulm Hotel staff helped a lot for this great experience.
SOLD OUT concert tour in Portugal and Holland
The international tour for the official release of Maria Mendes’s debut album “Along the Road” kicked off last September 27th in Portugal.
Maria’s home country full with inspiring places and beautiful people welcomed her and the musicians with big enthusiasm and appreciation.
Along the Road International tour in Brazil

ALBUM REVIEWED IN “ALL ABOUT JAZZ”, USA – JANUARY 24, 2013
On the elegant, gentle, joyous Along the Road, Mendes makes clear she has absolutely nothing to prove but plenty of promise and much to say
Virtuosity needn’t be on display at every moment; restraint, in fact, is an important yet often overlooked aspect of truevirtuosity. Norma Winstone is a clear example; certainly capable of plenty, more often than not the British singer’s performances are defined by nuance, subtlety and a direct line to the heart of the music. Maria Mendes is another, with the spirit of Brazil looming large over this young Portuguese-born/Netherlands-resident singer’s impressive debut, Along the Road—a nine-song set of standards, material by well-known South American composers, one original and one very pleasant surprise.
ALBUM REVIEWED IN “JAZZISM” MAGAZINE, HOLLAND – JANUARY 17, 2013
